Lisa Fithian, collective anarchist organizer.

Portland State University hosted well known AnCom community organizer Lisa Fithian on Feb. 17th, 2014. The event was entitled “Building Our Power: Organizing For The Long Haul“,  presented by the PSU Student Union and the group Students For Unity.

The program centered around direct action, which is sometimes referred to “non violent direct action” (*wink wink*, yeah right), and Miss Fithian went over numerous tactics that she has developed and employed over the years.

One such successful strategy was the way the 1999 Seattle WTO protests/riots were staged. Seattle was divided into “spokes” on a map, and several different “affinity groups” took responsibility for organizing their own protest in each spokes area, separate from every other group. No one knew what any other group had planned, all they knew is that ever sector of the city would have an action of some sort taking place. This made it impossible for police to find out exactly what was going to happen, because there was no master plan.

In the video, posted on YouTube by LaughingAtLiberals, Miss Fithian goes on to explain how they also had roving groups of people who could add bodies to any spokes area when needed.

From the Facebook event page:

Lisa Fithian has been working for nonviolent social change since the mid-1970’s. Over the years she has been a student, labor and community organizer on a broad range of issues. From environmental justice to student and worker rights, from peace and global justice to immigration and housing, Lisa continues to use a wide range of strategies and tactics and encouraged nonviolent direct action as one of the most effective strategies for change. Most recently, Lisa trained hundreds of people on facilitation, group process, consensus decision-making, and direct action during Occupy, and was instrumental in helping OWS take the horizontal shape that it did.

Lisa will be speaking about her experiences working in coalitions, how to build unity between diverse groups organizing for power together, and building durable, non-oppressive structures for that empowerment.“

Miss Lisa Fithian has also been seen in a video from the Chicago Teachers Union strike, orchestrating who is going to get arrested at a demo. Fithian was also caught calling conservative journalists “violent” at trainings for the #Ferguson protests.

“YOU GOT A DEATHWISH?!?!” Video Emerges From Oakland #Ferguson Beating

He Tried to Put Out a Dumpster Fire – So They Beat Him

Just yesterday we reported on a man who was savagely beaten for attempting to put out a fire started by Michael Brown protesters.

Video has now emerged of the incident.

In the video, you can see the gentleman attempting to put the fire out, saying “This is not how we do this”, while you can others unintelligibly shouting things at him and calling him “white boy”. The protesters circle back around, apparently egged on by an over-caffeinated girl on her bike, saying “You will get your A$$ beat!” and stating her support for using violence, and others begin to assault the victim. Another kid shouts out “We don’t need white saviors.”

After the attack, the man shows other people his mouth, as 2 teeth were knocked out, and he is seen digging through the dumpster looking for his glasses.

Washington State Agencies Punt On New Gun Law

As the state of Washington implements Initiative 594, it seems as though several agencies want nothing to do with the new law. Passed via ballot initiative on the November 4th election, I 594 requires background checks on all firearm “transfers”, including private sales. Reading through 18 pages of vague legal-ese, it looks like it’s nearly impossible to enforce.

The state Attorney General has punted to local law enforcement, releasing an official statement that reads in part:

“…Therefore, at this point we have no interpretations of the initiative to offer to the public beyond the text of the measure itself. Local law enforcement and local prosecutors typically enforce and prosecute firearms laws.”

Meanwhile, the Department Of Licensing issued a statement of their own:

“Please contact your local law enforcement agency if you have questions about firearms licensure requirements, clarification of definitions, violations of the law or need additional information regarding exemptions…. Again, the Firearms Program staff cannot provide legal advice or help the public or licensed firearm dealers interpret the firearms statutes found in RCW 9.41 or I-594

Kate Beck, head of the Washington chapter of Moms Demand Action, which vigorously promoted I 594.

You may notice a couple of concerning lines in that statement, such as “This program’s role in the implementation of Initiative 594 is limited to record keeping requirements.” If a background check is all this is, then why does a state agency keep records? The I 594 supporters continually said all along that this is not a registration scheme, so what are these records that are kept? Towards of the end of the statement, we also see “To report possession or ownership of a pistol acquired upon the death of the prior owner after December 4, 2014, contact the Firearms Program at 360.664.6616 or email at [email protected].” Since transfers to immediate family members are exempt from having to go through the background check process, why does there need to be any reporting of inheritance of a firearm?

The Washington State Police want nothing to do with enforcement of the state law, either, as they didn’t arrest anyone who participated in the “I Will Not Comply” rally that took place on December 13th, where 1,000-2,000 stood outside of the capitol building in Olympia, transferring and selling guns back and forth in an open defiance of I 594.

The Vancouver police department has a vague statement on their webpage that punts the ball back to the Department of Licensing, while Seattle PD has remained silent.

To demonstrate how easy it is for someone to break this new law, on the moment it went into effect, activists made a video of a firearms sale taking place on the street in downtown Vancouver, with nary a law enforcement officer in sight to do anything about it.

Lewis County prosecutor and sheriff have released statements saying they will not enforce it.

So the question now becomes “If no one wants to enforce a law, is it still a law?”

#Ferguson Protester Brutally Assaulted By Other Protesters… And You Won’t Believe Why

“I saw some men light a dumpster on fire, and I made the choice of putting out the fire” says the as-yet-unidentified victim. “The men returned, and it very very quickly escalated, and they started punching me.” vlcsnap-2014-12-17-02h14m44s66

The attack happened on Telegraph Ave. in North Oakland, CA.

Bystanders began to gather, and though they did not intervene, the attackers soon let up and continued on their way.

The man says he was punched about a dozen times, lost his 2 front teeth, and his glasses were bent. Despite this, he says “Absolutely I have gone back out and joined the protests again,” but he won’t be going alone and won’t be going to any night time demonstrations.

Amazingly, he still takes some of the blame. “What happened to me happened because I was alone” and says it’s irresponsible to be a lone ranger, while urging others “to not go alone.”

Another #Ferguson Protester Run Over… But Guess Who Was Cited

As the Michael Brown #Ferguson marches and protests continue, so too does the tactic of spilling into busy streets. But after cases of assault such as this, this, and this, motorists are starting to fear for their own safety when they get caught up in the middle of these marches. This past Saturday, December 13th, one such driver in Portland, Oregon feared for his safety and that of his family, and hit the gas as protesters began to surround his car, injuring one protester.

The aftermath was captured on video by Kif Davis, of Film The Police Portland.

The driver, Thomas Munsey, called police after he had left the area, to explain what had happened and why he left. Meanwhile, the protester, Julian Rist, suffered an injury to his foot and was cited by police for “improper position on a highway.” It is unknown if Munsey was cited or charged with anything.

This is similar to the situation that developed in Minneapolis last month, as a driver barreled over protesters in an attempt to escape the mob that was attacking the car.
